The First Day

by Surabhi Kaushik
(Bangalore, India)

Is it your first day or mine?
it is hard to say, for before this day,
all you did was play, play, play.

In hunger, anger, sleep and fright
all you needed was me to hold you tight.

But now you are ready to step into school,
a world away from just me and you.
I wonder if you’ll be alright
I am nervous but I am acting cool.

You slip your tiny, chubby hand into mine
your backpack climbed on to your back
you jump, you hop, you run
But never leave my hand…..

From your happy bouncy steps I know
you’ll be fine out there,
Now, it’s time for me to step up and grow!

The author must have undergone this
The narration speaks volumes of how a mother feels the separation anxiety. Very well expressed. Especially the baby palm in the mothers hand is beautiful and lovely
