Thanks for your comments Neera.
Unfortunately Child Marriages are still taking place in rural India, and Demon worship continues to be the practice in many villages.
Like Tara, there are many young widows who live such pathetic lives.

Great book, highly recommend
by: Neera

This is a story of atrocities child widows faced due to cast system practice 50 years ago in Southern India. It gives an insight of demon worship and the choices women are making in society where women are exploited and the strength God has gifted women to overcome her struggles

You have done a wonderful job of holding the reader captive, like your book did to me. I managed to finish reading the book in three days. Your description of each individual and their role in the system is very vivid. Well researched and very well penned. Looking forward to your next book on adopted persons looking for their roots.

Engaging....
by: Kakuli Nag

While the book is about Tara, her life, her adventures, her confidence, it was Madura all the way for me. The women in this book are strong, determined with a mind of their own and sensitivity – be it the protagonist child widow Tara or her mother Sarala, her foreign aunt Reeni , Sekhar’s mother Dechi, even the sacrificing Thelma and the well meaning Carmalita, Tara’s nun friend from school – all of them had a common trait to be slightly uncommon, be above average.

In my review of this book in my blog I wrote - This review is not complete if I do not mention the final character – The Thinking Rock. It was almost etched like a personality without a nervous system, but with a reflection like any human and this will haunt us writers about the mastery of its introduction in the plot and its role in the climax. Kudos to Eva for teaching us that!!

Your novel.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the novel Nimmi.
Many of us who live in cities don't have a clue about how people in remote villages live.
I felt I should throw some light on some of the despicable practices.
Thank you for your comments.

Loved the Book
by: Melanie Bogollu

I may sound repetitive, but this is an amazing book from one of my favorite authors. So, it is no surprise that I also could not put the book down till I had read the very last page. Very very interesting plot, and very well researched. We city folk do not have any clue as to the workings of a village and the set up they have going for them there. But this book really gets your imagining the conditions of the village and the people that lived in it.

Kudos to the author on a fine writing job as well. The essence of the language is not lost and yet it has retained its simple flavor which is trademark Eva Bell.

Thank you again Dr. for such a lovely refreshing book. Looking forward to many more such books.

Runaway Widow
by: Nimmi Suderman

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down for three days. It's very well written and the plot moves quickly.

The characters and story were extremely captivating. I especially appreciated the strong female characters of Tara (the main character, a widow) and her mother Sarala (also a widow) against the backdrop of a culture that can often treat these women as outcasts. Very inspiring.

I also learned a lot through the book - about the customs of villages with demon worshipping, about the sex trade practices that used to happen. I would highly recommend reading this book!

Review - Runaway Widow
by: Vimala Ramu

"The Runaway widow" is the latest novel by the well known short story writer Eva Bell. Here Eva has tried a broad canvas which is inclusive of South Kanara steeped in its superstitions and Bombay with its underworld with a British background. The authenticity of the narration proves the tremendous amount of research the author has done on these locales and their characteristics.

The protoganist Tara is a brave girl from the very backward South Kanara who deprived of a good marital life with her dear husband determines to go to Bombay to get a higher education and to come back to her native place to educate girls undergoing similar situations. And she succeeds in it and how ! In her long journey through her adventures, she manages to meet various characters, some good and some bad, including her life partner.

Eva has drawn a vivid picture of Tara's life. The book makes excellent reading besides being informative.

"Runaway Widow" is Eva Bell’s latest book. It is the story of an ancient traditional family set in a tiny village of South India where Bhuta (Demon) worship was in practice. The author brings out the social evils that existed in this part of the country even in 1940s (during and immediately after British rule in India) where a teenage widow has to suffer several ignominies thrust upon her by society. Unable to see her daughter’s pathetic condition, her mother decides to send Tara to her uncle’s house in Bombay with a foreign couple, where she believes Tara will be able to acquire a good education for which she has always hankered. Tara hopes to come back some day and start a school for the girls of her little village. But she is not taken to her uncle’s house and lands up in a dangerous place.

The characters in the story are well developed. Through her powerful words and unique style, the author makes them all come alive. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
