Body

by Nithya Mariam John
(Kottayam, Kerala)

a dance in the rain
spoke unending stories of
yesterday.
Freed from the confines
of the bare, white walls,
the body
swirled in the waters
of eternal mercies
sent from above.

the freed slave
can walk in shoes
and a cock crow at the
first shaft of morning light;

the mind ceases to worry
over the nude bodies
which revel in the mud.
