Cooked with Love

by Safia.A.R.

Whenever I prepare a dish at home, a special one, or for a guest, I inevitably think all those who too had prepared something with love for me. It’s amazing how the love they put in their dishes stays and follows you everywhere. I have been the recipient to many such dishes cooked with love and the memory always remains with me, and I long to do the same to others.

During Visits to my sister’s place, she would make me my favorite macaroni and cheese often even packing it for me on my journey back home. Her sister in law famous for her gourmet cooking would add one of her dishes too, which made my stay in their town an yummylicious one.

Holidays at my Maternal Grand Moms House had her special dish of Ghee rice and Chicken cooked in Coconut Gravy. Though it was a simple dish, yet her way of making it made extremely delicious compelling me to lick them away and asking for more.

On Eid Mornings, I would start my day with a bowl of hot Sheer korma, which my mother prepares the night before. She would prepare it the night before and we kids would have it the first thing in the morning and the rest of the day of course.

Beetroot Chutney sandwiches for picnics, Black forest cake for sixteenth birthday party, pizzas on weekends and many more are the nostalgia of food cooked with Love by my Mother.

And there are the Aunts, how can they be left behind? Our second mothers who too loved to see a smile on our face and hear about a happy stomach.

Fast forward to Adult hood.
I was a Mother of two, expecting my third. Tired and weary and my mother was so far away. I was resting and just then I heard the footsteps and the door bell ring.

I opened the door. It was my paternal Aunt, the one who stayed in the same city as I. She had with her, her maid and the Maid had few packets in her hand.

My Aunt stepped inside and asked the Maid to keep the stuffs. She said she had to rush and hugged me good bye. I didn’t wait a minute.
I attacked the packets and what did I find? A box of homemade burgers. A box of cup cakes boxes, another one of Mayo n corn Salad and box of kheer. All my favorite dishes!

I thanked my lucky stars to be blessed with such people who cook with love!
