
Mukthinath Temple is an ancient temple located at Mustang District of Nepal. It is a very popular temple for both Hindus and Buddhists.
The deity of Lord Vishnu is made of copper, sitting in the Padmasana posture, with Sri Devi and Bhudevi (Lakshmi and Saraswathi) beside him. The other deities in this temple are Ganesha, Garuda and Ramanuja).
History of the temple - According to legends it is believed that once Goddess Thulasi cursed Lord Vishnu and he immediately turned into Saligrama stone and formed in the Ghataki River. He performed penance here and attained salvation. Hence, he got the name Mukthinath.
The Main features of Mukthinath Temple
- It is one of the highest temples in the world.
- It is located in the Mukthinath Valley at an altitude of 3800 meters from the sea level.
- It is also known as Shri Murthy temple.
- It is one of the 8 most sacred shrines of Vaishnavism. (The other seven are Srirangam, Srinushanam, Tirupati, Narasimharanga, Totadri, Pushkar and Badrinath).
- It is one of the Shakthi pithas known as Ghantaki Shakthi pitha.
- It is one of the 108 Divya Desoms mentioned in the Puranas and glorified by the hymns of Thirumangai azhwar and periyazhwar.
- There are about 385 steps to climb to reach this temple.
- There is also a large deity of Buddha. Hence many Buddhists also visit here.
- There are two ponds here - Papa Kundam and Punya Kundam. It is believed that a wash in these ponds would wash away one's sins.
