No Mirror Hotel

by Mrudula Shinde
(Hyderabad, India)

I frequently go to Pune to visit my parents. My husband decided to take the trip to Pune with me for this long Christmas weekend. We settled on a road trip to Pune. The Hyderabad –Pune highway is the worst highway I have ever driven on.

We started in afternoon, by dinner time my husband was tired of driving on one lane road so we decided to halt in a nearby INN on the highway. We found a decent hotel .We checked the rooms before we decided to finalize it, it looked decent enough for a night stay. Post completing the formalities at the reception, when we were about to leave I saw a board which read –

“This hotel has NO MIRRORS, if you are carrying any MIRRORS please leave it outside the HOTEL”

This was weirdest message I had come across in my life. I poked by husband with my elbow so that he can read the message, he was dead tired and looked at me and said “Why do you want to see yourself in mirror at night, just leave it”, classic reply I thought and we both left from there. We went to our room, freshened up and were ready for dinner. We had dinner and were sharing the table with another couple who was also traveling and halted like us because of the road condition. We were chit chatting and the weird message on the hotel board was the point of discussion and I was curious enough to find out the mystery So I decided to just take a walk with my new found girlfriend, we called the waiter and enquired about the
MIRROR MYSTERY.

Waiter said - “Madamji, a lady appears in the mirror, her name is Aarti Bai. Legend says that she use to work in a mirror workshop and she was murdered by her husband. The hotel stands on the former workshop ground. If she appears for 5 times then she will take that person away with her. So madamji no mirrors are allowed here”

We both looked at each other and quietly returned to our table. I thought of having some masala pan so I asked my husband to get this for me while he was going for his smoke. He said that he has forgotten his wallet in the room, so I opened my wallet and handed over the money. Then I noticed that press button of my wallet has broken and the flap of my wallet was not closing so I just kept it open.

We went to our room and fell asleep as soon as we hit the bed. At around 3:00 AM i heard that my husband was breathing heavily and tapping on my arm to wake me up. I got up suddenly and saw him sweating heavily and he was trying to say something but words were not coming out of his mouth. I was shocked looking at his condition. He put his hand up in air and his figure count signified 4…..4…4……………

I was clueless of what that meant, and then he pointed at my wallet which was kept on the table just next to out bed with the flap open. I had almost forgotten that my wallet flap had a mirror on it and it was open facing our bed……..
