Stray Dogs

by Sanika Mariam
(Ernakulam, Kerala)

When they hit the streets,
outbreak of chaos,
vying each other,
exemplifying the poster- statement behind;
“Beware of stray dogs,
Vectors of Rabies.”

Commuters pant as much as a sprinter
to the bus- stop,
chased by an infuriated drooling beast,
for the hurled stones.

Hapless ones, witness
a shift in the sniffer,
while waiting inside,
cursing the erratic KSRTC Ordinary...
frightfully, gratefully
took the preventive shots
on the hand that fed.

Yet a few tread past,
neither provoke nor pat,
oblivious of obstruction;
beings that bark or berate,
to their destination.
