A Week Without Her

Nirmala was away on a holiday for about a week. She had gone out of station to visit some friends. It was a long-planned visit, and before leaving, she bought all the food and other things Pinky would need in her absence. After playing with her for a while, she told Pinky that she would be away for a few days. Then she walked towards the gate and left, unaware of how deeply her absence would affect her beloved cat.

Pinky waited in the evening for the familiar footsteps of her mistress, as usual. She was very disappointed when she did not see her at the usual time. The maid told her that Nirmala would not be coming back for the next one week. She then served Pinky her food and called her.

Since Pinky was deeply attached to her owner, she could not imagine staying away from her or not seeing her for a whole week. As far as Pinky was concerned, a week was not a short time at all; it was a very long time, and she felt terribly sad.

In the past, she had once missed her owner for a day, but this time it was not just a day—it was an entire week. She walked from room to room, searching for the familiar face of the mistress she loved so dearly and missed so much. She sat near the entrance, listening attentively to every sound outside. Whenever she heard footsteps, she rushed towards the door, hoping that it was Nirmala. But each time, disappointment awaited her.

When the maid placed her food in front of her, Pinky refused to touch it. She kept crying for her beloved mistress. She had no appetite and no interest in anything. She kept looking towards the gate, hoping to see Nirmala return.

Nirmala called her on the phone and tried to talk to her, but Pinky could not understand where the familiar voice was coming from. She could only cry in response. The maid offered her favourite treat, but Pinky refused even to go near it. She seemed uninterested in everything around her. Her playful nature vanished, and she spent most of her time lying quietly in her favourite corner.

It was not only food that Pinky refused; she was unable to sleep properly either. She would doze off for a little while, only to wake up suddenly, as though searching for the familiar hands that lovingly stroked her fur and the gentle voice that always comforted her.

After seven long days, her mistress finally returned home. Pinky welcomed her with all her heart. She was in heaven the moment she saw Nirmala. She ran towards her, rubbing herself against her legs and purring loudly. Once again, she felt the familiar hands lovingly stroking her fur and heard the gentle voice she had missed so much.

At last, Pinky felt safe and secure again. Her mistress was home. And for Pinky, that was all that mattered.
