One Amazing Thing-
Book Review..continued..

Continued from page 1

One Amazing Thing however, refuses to round off to a tangible conclusion. Its open ending leaves the lingering preponderance and suspense as to whether the survivors will be finally rescued or not. Some readers may find this lack of definiteness to be trying or frustrating. Also, as the volume of the novel is a slim one (around a couple of hundred pages), some of the stories are felt to be rushed through with the more minute details being simply glossed over. But on the whole, the text is a fascinating one and a compelling read.

Once the novel is completed, two ancillary but nevertheless thought-provoking questions resonate in the mind. For one, the reader wonders as to what story he or she might have recounted if placed in a similar situation. The second, and more important, is that in case the survivors are fortunately rescued, would their newly built equations with each other remain the same?--- or, would the outside world with its relentless forces and irrefragable reasoning emerge victorious over the fragility of human emotions? The answers to this elude us much like the will-o’-the-wisp in a dark forest.

Thanks, Ananya, for this thoughtful and insightful review. Though we have never met, I feel you have understood my intentions for the book better than many people who know me. I appreciate your careful reading.
