The Kittens Day Out

by Lakshmi Menon
(Bangalore, India)

There was a cute looking cat who was pregnant. Her name was Letty. She was looking for a safe place to litter her babies. She found an old woman's house who used to give her food whenever she visited her. She was always kind to Letty.

The old woman kept an old thin bed folded on her terrace, which she thought would be a wonderful place for Letty to litter her babies. As expected, that night Letty went to the terrace and littered her babies.

The next day the old woman saw them and she was very happy. She gave some chicken to the mother cat and some diluted milk to her four babies. She named them - Chittu, Mittu, Kittu, and Bittu. Chittu was pure white in colour, Mittu had some dots on her white body, Kittu had an orange colour on her face, and Bittu was black and greyish.

Letty went out in search of food, even after having eaten the chicken the old lady had given to her. When she came back, she fed her kittens with her milk, and they were also very happy and played there.

After a few days, they became naughty and wanted to go out and see the world for themselves. So when Letty went out in search of food, they too went out. Mittu, the bravest, led the way. but later they began to walk separately.

One by one all four of them returned home, before their mother's return. They shared their first day experiences among themselves. That time their mother returned home, and she saw her kittens very happy.
"What happened, children? You all are looking very happy today. What is the reason behind it? Did anything happen in my absence which made you all happy?"

"Yes,ma. We all had gone out today to see the outside world."

"Oh, that's good. I was thinking of sending you out after two days. I want to warn you to be very careful when you go out, so that you won't get into trouble."

They all agreed.
"Ok. Tell me, each one of your experiences? What did you see out? Did anyone trouble you?" asked the mother cat.

"I saw many huge cats and one of them said, "Mbay...…..". Some of them were black in colour, and some white and some in orange colour." said Bittu.

"Good. Those huge animals are not cats, they are cows."

"Ma, I saw two big cats. They were telling "Mae...…. I saw them both drinking milk from their mother," said Chittu.

"They are not cats, son. They are lambs" said mother Letty.

"What was your experience?" Letty asked her curious son Mittu.

"I saw a big cat. She has wings. She was hiding her kids under her wings. She was telling co...co...co.."

"It is not a cat. It is a hen and her chicks." Letty corrected her son, and then noticed that Kittu is sitting quietly.

"What was your experience, Kittu? You didn't share your experience." She asked.

"I saw a big black cat flying, and it came and sat near to me, saying, ka...ka...." Kittu was happy to tell his experience.

"It is not a cat, son, it is a crow," said Letty.

Letty hugged them all and they were very happy.
